  • Siblings Sean and Sara Watkins on the Next World Cafe – Thursday at 2pm

sara and sean watkins wideSiblings Sean and Sara Watkins spent over 30 years playing music together alongside Chris Thile in the popular bluegrass band, Nickel Creek. But along the way, they set up shop at the Los Angeles nightclub, Largo, where they honed their live act as Watkins Family Hour. The project developed over several years of improvised sets with performers they brought in – like Jackson Browne and Mandy Moore – but Sean and Sara’s new album is pretty much just the two of them. Today, the duo performs songs from Brother Sister live, and we’ll hear the story of the first time they wrote a song together. • Simone Porter Thrills Audience in Sibelius Violin Concerto - Sunday at 3pm

simone porterOn the program recorded the weekend of January 11 through 13, we’ll be hearing a work written in 2013 by Missy Mazzoli called Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres). Missy Mazzoli is in her second season as composer in residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

We’ll also hear the Symphony Number Two by Johannes Brahms and the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Jean Sibelius with soloist Simone Porter.

Santa Rosa Symphony music director Francesco Lecce-Chong has known Simone Porter since she was 17. Six years later, he loves listening to the musician she's become.

The second half of the program features the Brahms Second Symphony.

In the preconcert talk, music director Francesco Lecce-Chong said that Brahms is his favorite composer. He loves the elegance and richness of the composer’s music, and the interplay of instruments that makes him one of the great orchestrators.

The difficult birth of the composer’s First Symphony is often contrasted with the seeming painlessness of the Second Symphony’s creation. The Symphony Number 1 had taken two decades to complete – by the composer’s account. The second was the work of one summer.

Join us at 3 pm on Sunday, February 2 for the broadcast, hosted by KRCB News Director Steve Mencher.

  • Social Medicine: Restoring Public Health by Changing Society on Bioneers - Sunday at 4:30pm

    uploads 2F1611

We are told that our personal health is our individual responsibility based on our own choices. Yet, the biological truth is that human health is dependent upon the health of nature’s ecosystems and our social structures. Decisions that negatively affect these larger systems and eventually affect us are made without our consent as citizens and, often, without our knowledge. Dr. Rupa Marya, Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco, and Faculty Director of the Do No Harm Coalition says "social medicine" means dismantling harmful social structures that directly lead to poor health outcomes, and building new structures that promote health and healing.

  • Sohaila Abdulali: Taking About Rape on Alternative Radio – Sunday at 10am

pic sohaila abdulali e1568831018896Rape. From Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein to Wall Street financier Jeffrey Epstein to NFL star Antonio Brown, this ancient crime is in the news. The #MeToo movement has enabled many women to tell their stories for the first time. Who can forget Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony under oath at the Brett Kavanaugh hearings? Forever, women who have been raped have not been believed. That seems to be changing. In one case, which did attract some media attention, a California judge sentenced a Stanford University student found guilty of rape, for which the maximum sentence was 14 years, to six months. The student only served 3 months. An uproar ensued and the judge was recalled. The governor of the state signed a bill imposing mandatory minimum sentences in sexual assault cases. Much is to be done but the silence is broken. The conversations are happening.

Sohaila Abdulali is a writer and an activist. Her articles appear in The Guardian and other newspapers and journals. Her New York Times op-ed “I Was Wounded: My Honor Wasn’t” broke readership records. She is the author of What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape.
