Northern California Public Media consists of KRCB TV in the North Bay, KPJK TV in the South Bay, KRCB FM Radio 91 in Sonoma County, norcalpublicmedia.org, and the Northern California Public Media free digital app.

NCPM is seeking interns to assist with reporting and producing the news. The News Department presents a daily feature-length radio story about events mostly in the North Bay, as well as a quarterly television program called Connect the Bay about current affairs in the nine county Bay Area. Among our other projects is a podcast about Environmental Justice called Living Downstream and longer radio programs connected to important issues in the Bay Area. This is a great opportunity for someone with a journalism or strong writing background to gain professional journalism experience and add to their resume, getting hands-on practice in digital recording, editing and mixing of audio as well as possibly recording and editing video. We also approach the work of journalism in partnership with our community, and we are happy to share that approach with our interns and build upon their own contacts and interests.

Duties include:
Amplifying the voice of NCPM on social media
Researching stories and contacting and interviewing sources
Field recording and event coverage
Audio recording and editing
Photography and video skills for news
Identifying and compiling additional resources for web reports

Required:
Strong writing and editing skills
Experience with web-based research
Basic interviewing skills
Ability to commit to at least 10 hours a week

Preferred:
Fluency in Spanish or other languages spoken in the Bay Area
Digital editing of audio and/or video
Knowledge of digital recording equipment
Proven news judgment
Ability to quickly understand complex issues
Experience producing web feature elements
NCPM is looking for a Social Media Intern interested in gaining real-world experience while working to further the community connectivity activity of NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC MEDIA. Candidates must be hard-working, possess strong online and offline communication skills and be able to work independently on projects under the direction of the Content Manager and FM Executive Assistant.

Duties include:
Maintain as active social media presence on social sites to increase visibility, build communities and drive engagement
Provide unique and authentic content in the form of written posts, images, video and audio
Assist in maintaining consistent brand messaging and organizational voice across all platforms
Support and protect NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC MEDIA brands by ensuring positive, accurate, informative messaging is maintained and relevant to organizational goals
Monitor, track and report on discussion topics and online engagement opportunities
Other tasks, responsibilities and projects as needed

Requirements:
Current student of marketing, journalism, new media, communications or a related field of study
Adept at Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and similar channels
Strong computer skills and attention to detail
Able to take direction and work in a collaborative dynamic atmosphere
Hard-working and entrepreneurial
NCPM is looking for a Multimedia Production Intern interested in gaining real-world experience while working to further the local production projects of Northern California Public Media to serve the community. Candidates must be hard-working, possess strong technical knowledge, communication skills and be able to work independently on projects under the direction of the Content Manager and Production Manager.

Duties include:
Conduct research using the web, reference materials, meetings and phone interviews, to prepare background information in preparation for documentaries and short form video for TV, radio, and web.
Assist with writing interview questions and participating in creative brainstorming sessions
Set up interviews, schedule videotaping sessions, and scout locations
Transcribe interview footage; categorize interview content by theme, subject or other indexing method; and use Adobe Premiere’s features to organize editing projects and add metadata to files
Use broadcast server codecs to transcode files and observe the digital workflow in the master control facility in order to prepare TV content for on-air broadcast
Other tasks, responsibilities and projects as needed

Requirements:
Current student of journalism, new media, communications or a related field of study
Excellent communication skills (email, social media, written, verbal) and attention to detail
Basic video and/or audio editing skills to create rough cuts for both short and long form projects and to make minor edits to submissions from independent producers.
Experience with Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Encoder
Able to take direction and work in a collaborative dynamic atmosphere
 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be enrolled in high school or an accredited higher education institution or university
Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals in person, online, in writing, and on the phone.
