What is fascism? Michael Parenti, author and historian says, “Fascism historically has been used to secure the interests of large capitalist interests against the demands of popular democracy. Then and now, fascism has made irrational mass appeals in order to secure the rational ends of class domination.” Fascism flourishes in times of economic insecurity and cultural backlash. Opportunistic politicians offer up a platter of racism, xenophobia and hyper-nationalism. They stoke fear and resentment using simplistic slogans such as “Drain the Swamp” and “Build the Wall.” In the U.S. today, there is a whiff fascism in the air. Witness the march of white supremacists with torches held high in Charlottesville chanting “Blood and Soil,” an old Nazi slogan and “Jews Will Not Replace Us.” The president called them “very fine people.”

Our guest this week on Art of the Song is acclaimed singer/songwriter/song interpreter Joan Osborne. AllMusic.com declared her “the most gifted vocalist of her generation.” She’s performed with Motown’s revered rhythm section the Funk Brothers and toured with the Grateful Dead. In her latest album, Trouble and Strife, Joan tackles an array of socio-political issues including immigration and the weaponization of misinformation while simultaneously uplifting and empowering listeners. We spoke with Joan from her home in the Catskills (you might hear her daughter practicing saxophone in the background).

Joan Shelley is a proud Kentucky native, but she looked for inspiration far from home in making her new album, Like the River Loves the Sea. Along with her musical partner, Nathan Salsburg, she traveled to Iceland to record – There they found a wonderful string section, but absolutely no banjos on the island, much to Joan’s disappointment. We’ll hear all about the experience in her conversation with host Stephen Kallao today. And she performs a set of her beautiful new songs before a live audience.

Amazon, the retail behemoth, is named after the giant river in South America. The company began in the Seattle area in 1994. Since then it has not just grown and expanded but has transformed marketing. Consumers are attracted to lower prices, but overwhelmingly it’s the sheer convenience of online shopping and home delivery. But all is not rosy for Amazon’s hundreds of thousands of workers. They are pushing back, demanding better wages, working conditions and benefits. Again, as we see elsewhere in the corporate world, the lack of a union to back up worker needs is glaring. Labor organizing is difficult, and management likes it that way. Some politicians are saying Amazon is too big and too powerful and needs to be either broken up or more carefully regulated.

“The long-term energy future of America is not going to be written in fossil fuels,” declared John Kerry last April. President Biden recently appointed the former Secretary of State to a top position in his climate cabinet - United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate. Joe Biden did not start his campaign as the “climate candidate.” But as he starts his second month as president, he is looking at everything through a climate lens – from jobs and infrastructure to international diplomacy, public health, and social justice.
“He really is a person who was engaged somewhat in climate, but I don't think it was as yet sort of ingrained into him,” said former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “Well, it is now!” McCarthy and Kerry are just two of the climate leaders that President Joe Biden has tapped to put his ambitious climate plan into action.
In this program, we revisit conversations with these and other Climate One guests from the past year that have been named to prominent roles in the Biden-Harris administration.

What will it take to get the world’s major economies off fossil fuels? In late 2019, former US senator and secretary of state John Kerry, declared a World War Zero on carbon pollution.
“It’s really putting the nation on a war footing to avoid the next pandemic which will be exacerbated by the climate crisis, and the way to get ahead of it is to prepare and make the decisions now,” says Kerry. “The long-term energy future of America is not going to be written in fossil fuels”
Can the world’s major emitters decarbonize at the rate needed without throwing their economies over a cliff? With post-COVID economic recovery plans taking precedence, will the transition to a clean economy be pushed to the back burner?
Guests:
John Kerry, Former U.S. Senator and Secretary of State
Justin Wu, Head of Asia-Pacific, Bloomberg NEF
David Sandalow, Inaugural Fellow, Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University
Julia Poliscanova, Senior Director of Vehicles & E-mobility, Transport & Environment

John Prine, the beloved songmaker, singer and guitarist passed away from the coronavirus in Nashville on April 7, 2020. This week we present our memorable 2006 interview with John as he walks us through his life, from suburban Illinois back to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and catalog of enduring songs. Throughout his career, John Prine performed songs that presented wry and darkly humorous looks at every day America. We’ll hear about his Vietnam-era protest songs like “Take the Star Out of the Window” and “Sam Stone,” and his starkly personal environmental broadside “Paradise.” There are also performances of Prine’s songs by others and his own live appearances in this two-hour visit that has long been a favorite of American Routes listeners.
