In this Hip Deep edition, Afropop producer Wills Glasspeigel heads to South Africa to reveal the story of the inimitable Hugh Tracey, a field recordist born at the turn of the 20th century in England. In the US, we’ve become accustomed to climate -- like nearly everything else -- being politicized. Even when potential solutions might benefit everyone, a zero-sum mentality has taken hold where there’s an “us” and a “them” and progress for them comes at the expense of us. “Racism in our politics and policymaking is distorting our ability to respond to big problems and to advance collective solutions,” says political strategist Heather McGhee. But does it have to be this way? Can we look to the UK and elsewhere for a different model? Is it even possible to make the whole planet a winner?

Migration has always been a part of the human story. And in parts of the world where immediate threats include violence and extreme poverty, climate change probably isn't recognized by individuals as a driving motivation to leave home. But with increasingly erratic weather patterns, extended droughts, and resource scarcity fueling political conflict and putting pressure on already vulnerable populations, it's impossible to leave climate out of the conversation. How is climate change fueling the mass movements of humans around the world, and what does that mean for the security of nations and for our complex international economy?
