Forests have long occupied a fertile landscape in the human imagination. Places of mystery and magic - of wildness and wisdom - of vision and dreaming. Yet beyond mythic realms of imagination, we’ve largely treated forests as inert physical resources to satisfy human needs and desires. The main operative science behind this commodification has been market science – how to extract maximum resources and profits. Suzanne Simard is one of the revolutionary researchers transforming the science of forest ecology and coming full circle to the wisdom held by First Peoples and traditional land-based cultures from time immemorial. The story Simard is uncovering can change our story for how we live on Earth and with each other – for the long haul.

And he’s the subject of the new documentary, As It Was, chronicling the public break-up of the band – Along with their hits like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” Oasis was well known for the tense relationship between Liam and his brother Noel, who wrote the songs. That tension continues, as we’ll hear today. Plus, Liam discusses the 25th anniversary of Oasis’ debut, Definitely Maybe, and how it's different being a rock star today than it was in the ‘90s. The album title was a nod to J.D. Salinger and the hope was that 1993’s 14 Songs would establish former Replacements vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Paul Westerberg as a major force in American rock music. Although a highly memorable effort, the album failed to bring the Minnesota-native into stardom. That said, it’s remembered as one of his strongest solo releases and is produced by Matt Wallace (Faith No More, The Replacements). Listen for music from that disc as well as from the 2003 release by Westerberg’s alter-ego, Grandpaboy.

When institutional investors divest from fossil fuel companies, does it make a difference, or is the impact merely symbolic? Some advocate keeping your stock and your influence, using investor dollars to encourage change from within. Gun violence exacts an enormous toll on U.S. society-claiming tens of thousands of lives every year. Many more thousands are wounded and scarred physically and psychologically. From malls to schools from places of worship to concerts there is no safe space. Weapons of war are easily obtainable. We have the spectacle of armed militias in combat gear roaming statehouses, threatening the lives of government officials, and invading the national Capitol itself on January 6. The main gun lobby is the National Rifle Association, the NRA. It resists common-sense reforms. No matter the tragic occasion, the NRA recites its slogan, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” The NRA denounces calls for reasonable gun control as attacks on freedom and liberty. The organization’s actual history is hidden not only from the general public but even from its own members.
Frank Smyth is an independent journalist who has covered the NRA for many years. His articles appear in The Washington Post and The Progressive. He won a Society of Professional Journalists National Investigative Award for his Mother Jones story, “Unmasking NRA’s Inner Circle.” He is the author of The NRA: The Unauthorized History.

What might happen when the descendants of a white slave trader and of black people who were enslaved meet? That is the brave and wrenching journey embraced by Thomas DeWolf, whose white ancestors were once the nation’s biggest slave traders, and Belvie Rooks and Dedan Gills, descendants of African people who were enslaved. Our guest this week on Art of the Song is Austin, Texas singer/songwriter, BettySoo. During the five years since her last album of original material, BettySoo zigzagged her way across the North American and European continents more than a few times. An insomniac and someone who understands depression from her own life-long struggle, her songs capture moments of grief, loneliness, and loss, contrasted with moments of joy and love. We visited with BettySoo in front of a live audience at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma. In the second half of the show we’ll hear from Dr. Shelley Carson with an essay on the Envision Brainset for the creativity corner.

But ambitious startups are on their way to making three-dimensional commutes a reality. For now, there are still many challenges to getting those flying cars off the ground, from mechanics and design to infrastructure, regulatory issues, air traffic, and zoning. What does our flying car future look like?
