Millions of Californians were plunged into darkness recently when Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) cut the power to prevent their equipment from sparking more wildfires. The planned shutoffs are designed to protect utilities and the public during the state’s driest months — but frustrations were sparked with the shifting of costs from company to customer. Estimates for these intentional blackouts range as high as $3 billion in losses.
How did the world’s fifth largest economy get to this point? What is PG&E doing to modernize its grid and prepare for more climate-fueled impacts? How should the company that powers much of Silicon Valley be owned and operated?

We take a deep dive into the vaults of Blue Note Records, the independent label that helped put artists like Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Jimmy Smith on the map. Flagbearer of trad jazz, bebop, and the cool school, Blue Note is still at it after 79 years and has expanded its wheelhouse to include vocalists like Norah Jones, Ryan Adams, and Van Morrison. We talk with producer extraordinaire and Blue Note president Don Was about the label’s past and new directions. And we confab with record maven Michael Cuscuna about digging through Blue Note’s back catalog and giving life to unreleased and out-of-print masterpieces. Plus, we hear from Aaron Neville, Jason Moran and Lonnie Smith about their part in the legendary label’s history. It’s a parade of jazz, old and new, borrowed and blue… and then some!

Bluegrass all-star Billy Strings grew up playing in the traditional style of Bill Monroe and The Stanley Brothers – But then he discovered his own sound. Billy fuses bluegrass with psych-rock, country, and jam music, without fussing over what bluegrass “should be”. It’s also part of what makes his live shows so exciting. We’ll hear one of those live performances today, and Billy joins host Stephen Kallao from his home in Nashville to talk about music, fishing, and fixing up his old Chevy. That’s coming up, on the next World Cafe.

Join us as we dig into a healthy serving of Down Home Blues from Chance Records — a label owned and operated by Windy City businessman Art Sheridan from 1950 to 1954. During that time they released some spectacularly raw and gritty 78s, from the likes of Homesick James, Arthur “Big Boy” Spires, Willie Nix, J.B. Hutto, and more. It’s Down Home Blues from Chance Records, on this episode of Blues Unlimited

North African music receives very little coverage in the United States. There are no high-profile mixes of recent Tunisian underground dance music from hip DJs, and no young Algerian musicians with major distribution deals in the U.S. So we decided to explore what exactly is going on in this part of the world. We trace the origins of some of the region’s most interesting current music to the banlieues of Paris, like raï ’n’b--a new autotuned and synth-heavy offshoot of raï. We also explore the Gnawa reggae movement, which finds common ground between Sufi trance and the message of Marley. Returning to familiar traditions, we present a live recording of Kabyle mandoleplayer Hamid Ouchène from Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique festival, backed by a group of Montreal-based musicians with origins throughout the African continent. We next turn to the North African metal scene that developed during Algeria’s civil conflict to meld Berber folk music with black metal. Finally, we check out the new chaabi revival.

Botswana is a large, landlocked country in Southern Africa, a vast stretch of desert and savannah between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia with a population of only 2.2 million. While widely overlooked internationally for their music, over the past 20 years Batswana have steadily built a diverse and fruitful local scene that includes traditional choirs, hip hop and kwaito, R&B and jazz and even heavy metal. While the biggest star in the country, Franco, packs stadiums with his Congolese-derived Setswana kwassa kwassa, Vee Mampeezy, Charma Gal and a host of aspiring stars champion a distinctly local fusion called house kwassa: a mix of rumba guitars, house beats and kwaito vocals. In this program we hear from Kabelo Mogwe of the popular cultural troupe Culture Spears; hip hop star Jujuboy; the metal band Skinflint; Afro soul singer Mpho Sebina and reformed house kwassa badboy Mingo Touch. We also head to a midnight recording session with young producer Zolasko and singer Naisi Boy and learn the insides of the Botswana music video industry with videographer Jack Bohloko.

First, we hear how British blues pioneer John Mayall broke out of England with his band the Bluesbreakers, bringing British blues to a larger audience. We’ll hear some of Mayall’s sources and contemporaries, like Big Maceo and Eric Clapton. Then, it’s butt shakes and backbeats with Big Freedia, the Queen Diva of New Orleans Bounce, a rhythmic dance music with sources in hip hop and rap, as well as much earlier jazz and R&B. To transform our culture from its focus on dominance and hierarchy to one of connection, empathy and collaboration, it’s vital that we re-envision the essential (or archetypal) masculine, which changes everything. This rarely tackled topic is the subject of a deeply authentic dialogue among Playwright and activist Eve Ensler and three men working to change men and change the story: Tony Porter, co-founder, A Call To Men; Dallas Goldtooth, Indigenous activist, member of the 1491’s Native American comedy troupe; George Lipsitz, board president, African American Policy Forum.
“Unprecedented” is one of the most overused words of 2020, but it reflects the superstorm of disruption brought on by an overlapping pandemic, racial justice awakening, and presidential election. How has the focus on climate shifted in a year shaped by multiple social and economic crises? Join us for a look back on a year of climate conversations like no other.

This week we present a special edition of Art of the Song celebrating the legendary folk music club, Caffè Lena. The year 2020 marks the 60th anniversary of the caffè as well as Sarah Craig’s 25th year as executive director. Music heals. Music builds community. There is no place where that is more evident than Caffè Lena.
Located in Saratoga Springs, New York, Caffè Lena presents a wide variety of music in an intimate setting steeped in history. The Library of Congress calls Caffè Lena “An American treasure,” and they have been recognized by The GRAMMY Foundation for important contributions to the development of American music.

On the fourth episode of California Burning, we focus on the issues surrounding fires where the urban and wild spaces meet. We hear from people who have experienced some of the most tragic fires in California’s history from the Thomas Fire that caused lethal debris flows in Santa Barbara, the Tubbs Fire that ravaged neighborhoods Santa Rosa, and the Camp Fire which destroyed over 19,000 homes in the town of Paradise. We also join up with a forest thinning operation in Magalia that slowed down the Camp Fire - and made it possible for firefighters to save much of the town and protect the area’s water supply from fire contamination.
Hear California Burning Sunday morning at 10 am on KRCB FM Radio 91.
