Gallows humor at its best, this musical comedy convulsedBroadway in 2014, winning four Tonys, including Best Musical and Best Book.Based on the 1907 novel “The Autobiography of a Criminal,” by Roy Horniman, AGentleman’s Guide tells the tale of impoverished Monty, who learns at his dyingmother’s bedside that, far from being a street urchin, he is ninth in line tobe the Earl of Highhurst, with all the wealth and power that entails. Well,that’s a lot of people to eliminate —but he will give it his best. And that’sjust Act One. When the show debuted, the New York Times called it“ingenious” and “among the most inspired and entertaining newmusicals.”
