Milton Friedman is the godfather of modern conservative economics. A Nobel-prize winner, his ideas informed what is called the Chicago School. He laid the groundwork for Reagan-era neoliberalism with his landmark essay, “The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits.” That’s pretty straightforward. Make as much money as you can. Society? It can take care of itself. In the decades since Friedman’s influential essay, concentrated monopoly corporate power has evolved into corporatism. What is it? It is crushing our democracy and corrupting our elections.”

Ralph Nader, a legendary figure, has spent a lifetime fighting on behalf of ordinary people. The Atlantic named him one of the hundred most influential figures in U.S. history. Founder of Public Citizen, he is a long-time advocate for consumer safety and workers’ rights.

New Orleans’ own Basin Street Records is a homegrown record label featuring superstars of the local sound like the Rebirth Brass Band, Davell Crawford, Jason Marsalis and Kermit Ruffins. The label got its start with a live recording of Kermit’s band at the Uptown club Tipitina’s in 1997. Now, over two decades later and several Grammy Awards under its belt, Basin Street Records still holds true to the sounds of New Orleans. We talk with Basin Street founder Mark Samuels about the label’s history. We listen in on the artists that call it home, including Jon Cleary, whose “Quarantini Sessions” streaming live from his Funk Headquarters in the 9th Ward are helping us get through these challenging times. The golden age of vinyl records is long past in Africa, but the market for rare and reissued African vinyl outside the continent has been growing steadily since the early 2000s. DJs and collectors have turned an obsession with rare records and forgotten gems from Cape Town to Tangiers into an international reissue and compilation industry, led by record labels such as Soundway, Strut and Analog Africa. This program explores some of the complex and shifting dynamics of neocolonialism, cultural ownership and audience in the African vinyl market. We’ll remember legendary drummer Ginger Baker, who died Sunday at age 80 after a lengthy illness. Baker is perhaps best known as the drummer for Cream, featuring Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton. But he was a versatile player who favored jazz and whose musical life saw him collaborating with African music legend Fela Kuti, post-punk icons Public Image Ltd., and space rock outfit Hawkwind. We’ll hear selections from throughout Baker’s career on this episode, including his work with Masters of Reality.

You’ll be hearing excerpts of two interviews Terry Gross recorded with spy novelist John LeCarre, from 1989 (during the waning days of the Cold War, two years before the fall of the Soviet Union) and from 2017.  Both interviews look back on his work as a spy for British Intelligence, before he began his career as a writer.  LeCarre died on Saturday, of pneumonia.  He was 89.

From his childhood immersion in Zulu culture, his mastery of Zulu language, dance and guitar playing, some 20 albums with three different bands, his tireless world touring and, finally, his brave public battle with cancer, Clegg was an inspired witness to tumultuous history in South Africa and around the world. Afropop was fortunate to conduct many interviews with the maestro and raconteur over 30 years. In this program, we sample the man’s words and music over a long shape-shifting career.

Listen for selections by Beth Bombara, The Bird and The Bee and more artists featured on our Best of 2019 list. We'll remember Canadian musician and author Neil Peart of the band Rush. Peart, who joined the band in 1974, became the group's primary lyricist and later authored several books, including the travel diary Ghost Rider. He died Tuesday, January 7, at the age of 67 following a three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer.

On the next Fresh Air, Dave Davies remembers singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver's, he died this week at the age of 81. Shaver became famous in the 1970s as the songwriter for the so-called "country music outlaws," including Waylon Jennings. Join us.

On the next Fresh Air, we remember Pete Hamill, who was described in the New York Times as the “quintessential New York journalist.” He died at the age of 85.  Hamill was a reporter and columnist and became the top editor at the New York Post and the Daily News. We remember south African songwriter Joseph Shabalala who led the choir Lady Smith Black Mambazzo. He died Tuesday.  Also, Nick Hornby. His 1995 book High Fidelity about an obsessive record store owner was made into a film, and now has been adapted and updated for a new Hulu series starring Zoe Kravitz. Join us.
