The list of U.S. invasions, occupations, coups and sanctions in Latin America is a mile long. It is after all, “our little region over here,” and our “backyard” according to policymakers in Washington. Starting with the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 the continent and its people have been a laboratory for U.S. intervention, a kind of piñata, a punching bag. As the U.S. became a world power, techniques perfected in Latin America were then globalized. Today, once again Washington turns its hegemonic gaze south. The National Security Advisor John Bolton denounces the “troika of tyranny”— Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua and the leaders of those countries as “the three stooges of socialism.” Apparently with no sense of shame or of history Bolton declared, “We’re not afraid to use the phrase ‘Monroe Doctrine’ in this administration.”

America’s most popular alcoholic beverages are about to take a hit from climate. Mild, sunny growing conditions have made California king of a $62 billion wine industry, and more than 7,000 breweries in the U.S. rely on barley, a key ingredient in beer that is partial to the cool temperatures of northwestern states and Canada. But both grapes and barley are sensitive to a changing climate. And years of disruptions from drought, fires, and rising temperatures have brewers and winemakers wondering: will "business as usual" survive into the next generation?

Health impacts may show up in months, or take the form of devastating cancer rates that rise over a decade. Regardless of speed or intensity, the climate emergency will impact us all. Our guests this week on Art of the Song are Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears. Reveling in the groove of Appalachian fiddle/banjo duets, funky bass lines, and soulful harmony singing, the Colorado-based duo draws from a deep history of traditional American music.
In 2012, Lizzy co-founded the folk trio Free the Honey. After a chance meeting in 2014, Lizzy invited Natalie to join Free the Honey on bass. After the band broke up in 2016, Natalie co-founded the string and groove trio, Pearl & Wood, and performed with them until 2018. What then emerged was the duo of Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears.
We spoke with them about their album Just Over the Ridge, which made its way to number one on the Folk Alliance International chart.
In the second half of the show for the Creativity Corner, author, songwriter and business coach, Cliff Goldmacher offers the seventh and final essay in a series entitled The Reason for the Rhymes.
