“Radio saved me.” Brandon J McDermott grew up pretending to be a baseball announcer and ranking all the songs he knew said just this about himself: “radio saved me.” McDermott, a successful NPR broadcaster in Lincoln, Nebraska, is local host of NPR’s “Morning Edition” and news reporter at NET, Nebraska’s PBS & NPR Stations. He’s just received a national award from the Radio Television Digital News Association and National Endowment for Financial Education, the 2020 Personal Finance Reporting Award for his story “Nebraska Schools Tackle Financial Literacy."
Brandon’s life, however, hasn’t always been so focused and productive. His boyhood years were troubled and troubling. His parents were not equipped with parenting skills and subjected Brandon to emotional and physical abuse that no child should experience, but unfortunately many have. Brandon J McDermott tells his story in Abandon Brandon, A memoir. Along with being a broadcaster, Brandon is an advocate for stepping out of the silence of shame. It has been a key element in his own transformation. Join Suzanne M Lang in conversation with Brandon J McDermott, Sunday, December 6th at 10am PT. Broadcasting at 90.9 and 91.1 and streaming at Radio (norcalpublicmedia.org).

After several full-length albums, and even an off-Broadway show, called “My Mother has Four Noses,” her latest project keeps it short and sweet. She joins the World Cafe’s Bruce Warren today to discuss the inspiration for the EP’s title, which may not be what you think. And she performs new music, live. On the next World Cafe.

Is clinging to habits and cravings destroying our future? An outspoken critic of factory farming and animal-centric diets, Jonathan Safran Foer writes that stopping climate change begins with a close look at what we eat — and don’t eat — at home for breakfast. At the office, industry leaders like Google are taking steps toward veggie-forward diets by reducing meat, rather than cutting it out entirely. But when it comes to global food habits, are societies up for changing norms — individually and collectively — at a scale ambitious enough to meet the challenge?
Guests:
Jonathan Safran Foer - Author, We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast
Helene York - Chief Procurement Officer, Guckenheimer Enterprises; Faculty Member, Food Business School, Culinary Institute of America

And iconic, prolific country Americana singer-songwriter Steve Earle returns to the show (his 9th visit) to showcase his recent tribute album to the legendary Guy Clark. Rounding things out, our eChievement Award story this week features a young man who founded a humanitarian nonprofit organization working to improve sanitation conditions in the developing world.

In the film, The Insider, Al Pacino plays crusading journalist Lowell Bergman, as he takes on the tobacco industry and his bosses at the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes.
This fall, Bergman sat before a live audience in Healdsburg and recounted stories of his career, both before and after that notable time.
Bergman didn't invent investigative journalism, but he won a Pulitzer Prize, and a bushel of other awards, practicing it. And his efforts to educate young people in the art of this work have made him one of the craft's most recognizable and respected practioners.
Sonoma West Publishers invited Bergman to Healdsburg (he has a home nearby), and in partnership with us at Northern California Public Media, he told some stories he later confessed he'd never told in public.
Join us in listening to an hour with Lowell Bergman, Sunday at 4 pm on KRCB FM Radio 91.
