Western Gray Squirrels make a rapid tapping sound with their feet. The main reason for doing this is to sound the alarm. This can be to let a predator know they’ve been spotted. Or to warn other squirrels that a predator is lurking nearby. In this case it was just the microphones, but that’s okay! Western Gray Squirrels also make alarm calls with their voices. In addition to sound they use body language to communicate. Especially with their big bushy gray tails. Western Gray Squirrels are common throughout Sonoma County. Keep an ear out for them. And don’t take it personally when they sound the alarm.
