For many people, the celebration of the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany season begins with the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, a century-old tradition at St. Olaf College. The first festival was a musical program for the college community, planned and directed by F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the St. Olaf Music Department. The festival continues as an expression of the College's rich musical heritage. Recorded on campus, Christmas at St. Olaf: Ris'n with Healing In His Wings features lively and festive music, including "Gloria" by Andre J. Thomas a work arranged for massed choir, soloists, and a full orchestra in a gospel musical style. Other music includes familiar Christmas carols, beautiful and contemplative choral anthems, and rollicking orchestral flourishes.

  • Compost and Carbon Sequestration Short Story

    Kevin Lunny founded West Marin Compost after realizing the local need to recycle organic materials from the area into nutrient-rich and biologically active soil amendments which could be placed right back into the land in Marin County. Lunny's creation of the composting facility filled a void in the area's agricultural industry by providing organic compost to farmers, ranchers and vineyard managers. In addition to providing for the local farming community, West Marin Compost also provides itself as a research ground for UC Berkeley's Silver Lab which researches human impacts on climate change and potential mitigation solutions. West Marin Compost supplies researches with a controlled data point for study––compost––while researchers glean information on how it can aid carbon sequestration.

  • Conexiones: A Mexican Cuban Connection

    conexionesWednesday, September 19 at 9 pm on KRCB in the North Bay. A documentary chronicling the 2016 tour of Cuba by Mexican American roots group Los Cenzontles. "Conexiones" captures a unique glimpse into Cuban cultural life during an historic time of openness between the United States and Cuba. Los Cenzontles were granted rare access to perform traditional Mexican music in four cities around Cuba where they engaged with Cuban musicians from a variety of walks of life. There they discovered the richness of Cuban culture and Cuba's deep affection for and fascination with Mexican culture. The film is a poignant statement on the importance of cultural exchange, identity and openness at a time of uncertainty in U.S. and Cuban relations.

The Bay Area’s politicians include the woman second in line for the presidency (Rep. Nancy Pelosi) as well as mayors of two of its biggest cities. With an eye on the centenary of women’s suffrage in 2020, we’ll talk with women in education, tech, nonprofits, and politics to learn what battles must still be fought.

    BAYMEC Community Foundation Executive Director Ken Yeager tours his recent exhibition "Coming Out: 50 Years of Queer Resistance and Resilience in Silicon Valley." Included are mementos and artifacts from decades of activism and celebration of the suburban LGBTQ+ community in the South Bay. An offshoot of BAYMEC (Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee), the Foundation partnered with History San Jose on the installation, in order to preserve a record of this significant past.

    Matthaus Lam is an accomplished young artist with a playful sense of humor that pours out of his amazing sculptures. Lam's creativity sparked early–he has created works of art since he was just five years old. He specializes in animals and likes to share them with adults and kids alike. Lam told us, "I hope they learn about protecting animals and conserving wildlife." Matthaus Lam is autistic and is a participant in AbilityPath's Phil Egan Art Program.

  • Connect The Bay: Sonoma TrainTown Railroad

    A Bay Area treasure since the Sixties, TrainTown brings the art of model railroading to a new level. Passengers on this scaled-down train take a 30-minute journey through tunnels and across bridges to visit a miniature town. All have been carefully designed to delight the senses and spark the imagination.  Engineer Bob says that a landscape architecture technique called "forced perspective" was used in construction, and he shares his deep appreciation for the craftsmanship of the precision scale modeling that has gone into building the locomotives and rolling stock. But another word for it all might be: "magic."

  • Connect The Bay: SWEA Christmas Fair

    The San Francisco Chapter of the Swedish Women's Educational Association holds a festive Christmas Fair every year, this season in Palo Alto. It is the place to find all things Swedish: from crafts, to decorations, to food and music. A highpoint is the traditional Sankta Lucia procession of youth in white gowns singing seasonal Swedish songs. SWEA says it is the largest organization outside Sweden promoting Swedish language, culture and tradition.

    Matthew Shepard 603x452Wednesday, June 17 at 8 pm on KPJK TV in the South Bay. In October of 1998, Matthew Shepard was beaten, tortured, and left to die. Twenty years later his legacy is remembered in a unique production that uses music, poetry, and interviews to explore a pivotal time in our history. When a hate crime is committed, what does it mean to be a victim, a parent, a community member, a perpetrator? How do we learn to be compassionate and find hope in hopeless situations? As a response to this hate crime, Matthew's story is placed into the context of a passion story presented as a three-part oratorio, bringing new depth to a harrowing story of loss and highlighting the role of art and how we react to tragedy.

    dday Pointe du Hoc 603x452Sunday, May 26 at 9 pm on KRCB TV in the North Bay. Tells the remarkable story of the U.S. Army's 2nd Ranger battalion, led by Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder, which scaled the 100-foot cliffs of Pointe-du-Hoc in Normandy on June 6, 1944 to destroy six German cannons thought to be located there. The 155mm guns, situated halfway between Omaha and Utah Beaches and within firing range of the planned allied assault, needed to be taken out for Operation Overlord to succeed. Many believed it was a suicidal mission for the men involved. Narrated by actor David McCallum and featuring interviews with surviving veterans from the Pointe-Du-Hoc assault, the documentary chronicles the dangerous and daring mission, including what happened after the Rangers fought through machine gun fire, cut rope ladders, and lobbed grenades to find that the six artillery guns had been moved from the Pointe in the days prior. What followed was two days of fighting where the outnumbered Rangers held off German troops and prevented them from retaking the strategic oceanside position.
