Tony Allen is among the greatest drummers of the past century. His sudden death at 79 in April, 2020, was a shock felt around the world. In addition to his seminal work with the king of Afrobeat Fela Kuti, Allen had a prolific solo career and performed and recorded with artists from Angelique Kidjo, Ray Lema, Ernest Ranglin and Oumou Sangare to Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Jeff Mills. In this program we salute a towering career in global music, with insights from Michael Veal, co-author of Allen’s autobiography.

To many, the word “Resistance” might mean marching, protesting, or shouting – But for the Resistance Revival Chorus, it means singing. The 60-plus member group, made up of women and non-binary people from all backgrounds, has been performing uplifting and empowering music for the past four years. And now, they’ve released their debut album, featuring protest classics as well as original songs – It’s called This Joy. The group’s musical director, Abena Koomson-Davis, along with chorus member Alba Ponce De Leon, share how the chorus originated and how they use their voices to make change. Released in 1973, Genesis’ Selling England By The Pound provided social commentary on the changing face of life in Great Britain and featured several tracks which would become staples of the band’s live show for decades to come. Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett has just released a live album on which he revisits the LP in its entirety and performs one song started during those sessions but which he did not finish fully writing until decades later. We’ll hear from Hackett’s new effort as well as selections from the original Genesis LP.

The veteran bluegrass instrumentalist, Rob Ickes, and the young guitar prodigy, Trey Hensley, have formed an inspired collaboration. Ickes and Hensley came out of the gate with a Grammy nomination for their debut album after playing together for only one year. Their new release, World Full of Blues, expands upon their country and bluegrass roots. It features a fuller sound with a backing band, but their acoustic set for Americana Fest spotlights the pair’s unique chemistry on stage.
