You’ll be hearing excerpts of two interviews Terry Gross recorded with spy novelist John LeCarre, from 1989 (during the waning days of the Cold War, two years before the fall of the Soviet Union) and from 2017. Both interviews look back on his work as a spy for British Intelligence, before he began his career as a writer. LeCarre died on Saturday, of pneumonia. He was 89.

Johnny Clegg holds a unique place in South Africa’s musical pantheon. From his childhood immersion in Zulu culture, his mastery of Zulu language, dance and guitar playing, some 20 albums with three different bands, his tireless world touring and, finally, his brave public battle with cancer, Clegg was an inspired witness to tumultuous history in South Africa and around the world. Afropop was fortunate to conduct many interviews with the maestro and raconteur over 30 years. In this program, we sample the man’s words and music over a long shape-shifting career.

We’ll remember singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, who died on August 23 at the age of 38. He is the son of musician Steve Earle and produced a series of critically acclaimed recordings since 2007. In addition to music from several of his releases we’ll hear selections from Jason Isbell, Centro-Matic and Old ‘97s.
