Connect the Bay: Alebrijes in San Jose

Alebrije invasion! In time for Hispanic Heritage month, downtown San Jose’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park and surrounding area has been taken over by eight awesomely huge mythological beasts from the folk traditions of Mexico—alebrijes--and people are enchanted by their magic. These towering monumental sculptures are currently touring U.S. cities to spotlight Oaxaca’s rich artistic traditions and cultural heritage. They have captured the hearts of passers-by with their engaging combination of whimsical imagination, artistry, charm, and fun. Which creature is your favorite?
Installations made possible by San Jose Jazz and community partners.
