This special Metropolitan Opera Encores program features 19 unforgettable arias and duets selected from the past eight seasons of Great Performancesat the Met broadcasts, performed by today's greatest opera stars and talents. Hosted by soprano Deborah Voigt, the special covers a wide range of operatic ground, from heartbreak to hilarity, delivered by such artists as Natalie Dessay, Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Juan Diego Florez, Jonas Kaufmann, and Anna Netrebko, along with Voigt herself. These extraordinary moments, selected from more than 75 productions, were initially seen as part of the Met's global Live in HD movie-theater transmissions, later shared with PBS audiences as presentations of Great Performances at the Met.
Monday, December 1 at 7 pm. Angelic Jackie Evancho returns to PBS with her latest collection of songs from her new CD, Awakening. Drawn from the best known pieces from the classical canon, Broadway, uplifting sacred music, and pop songs, Jackie's astoundingly beautiful young voice soars again at the magnificent Longwood Gardens Open Air Theatre. Longwood Gardens is over 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows in Pennsylvania's Brandywine Creek Valley, Jackie's home state. This is the first time Longwood Gardens has ever permitted a television special to be taped on site and, in addition to her on-stage performance, Jackie will be performing at various stunning locations throughout the Gardens such as the Chimes Tower and the spectacular Main Fountain. Jackie will be joined by Cheyenne Jackson who will both host and perform with Jackie. Cheyenne, star of Broadway, film and television, is perhaps best known for his starring and award-winning Broadway performance in Finian's Rainbow, his recurring role in NBC's 30 Rock, and his starring role in HBO biopic, Liberace, Behind the Candelabra. The two will also show us some of the splendid beauty of the Gardens as they tour some gorgeous key locations within it. Repeats December 9, 2014 at 8:30pm.
Wednesday, December 3 at 7 pm. This documentary celebrates the impact of the preeminent trio that brought folk music to America's mass audiences, combining their artistry with their activism and inspiration over the last 50 years. The program will feature powerful, moving, performances by Peter, Paul and Mary starting with the era of the group's emergence in Greenwich Village through the Civil Rights and anti-war eras where their anthems provided America's soundtrack of social and political change into the 21st century where their legacy and music continues to inform, inspire and enrich successive generations—still providing a moral compass for the way we live our lives. Repeats December 8 at 10:00 pm.
