Sunday, August 13 at 9 pm. Why has the Broadway musical proven to be such fertile territory for Jewish artists of all kinds? From Broadway's golden age, names like Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Gershwins, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim immediately come to mind. More recently, Broadway babies such as Stephen Schwartz, Marc Shaiman and Andrew Lippa represent a sampling of the Jewish talents who continue to leave their mark on musical theater. Filmmaker Michael Kantor focuses on this central question left largely unaddressed in his Emmy-winning Broadway: The American Musical, combining interviews with performance footage, including many of the rousing anthems and timeless ballads America has loved for a century.
Saturday, August 12 at 9 pm. A concert hosted by beloved icons Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits ("I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am") and Davy Jones of The Monkees ("Daydream Believer"). The special features hits and favorites of the AM radio era: Paul Revere & The Raiders ("Kicks"), Gary Lewis & The Playboys ("This Diamond Ring"), The Kingsmen ("Louie, Louie"), The Ventures ("Hawaii Five-O"), Question Mark & The Mysterians ("96 Tears") and Jefferson Starship ("Somebody to Love"). Every song is a classic from the decade of peace, love and profound social change - sung by performers who represent a period of time that resonates through the generations.
Monday, August 7 at 8 pm. A sampler of the many single documentaries and short series that Ken has produced over the years. This new material comprises about 25% of the program and explores the tremendous depth and breadth of his work with a special emphasis on films about Thomas Jefferson, Susan B. Anthony, Mark Twain, Jackie Robinson and others. The remainder is material from the Ken Burns: America's Storyteller program that was released in March.
Saturday, August 5 at 10:30 pm. Australian Pink Floyd, the worldwide-touring tribute band, recreates the musical and visual concert experience of one of rock music’s most iconic groups. The band returns in 2017 with a new set of Pink Floyd songs–"The Best Side Of The Moon"–incorporating a full performance of what many would call the most iconic rock album of all time.
They'll play the classis Dark Side of the Moon album in its entirety as well as some of the most popular songs from the Syd Barrett years, "Meddle," "Wish You Were Here," "Animals," "The Wall," "The Final Cut," "Momentary Lapse of Reason," and the "Division Bell."
Audiences can also expect a fabulous laser and light show, special filmed footage and original animation onto a large high resolution LED screen, inflatables such as Skippy (a Pink Kangaroo), The Teacher and Pig and a 10-piece band playing the songs with all the note for note attention to detail and sound that has been honed from almost 30 years of performances.
KRCB is offering tickets as a membership gift when you become a member during the program. The concert takes place at the Fox Theater in Oakland on August 29th at 8:00 pm. Special members-only meet and greet with the band included.
