This American Life is a weekly public radio show broadcast on more than 500 stations to about 2.1 million listeners. There's a theme to each episode, and a variety of stories on that theme. It's mostly true stories of everyday people, though not always. There's lots more to the show, but it's sort of hard to describe. Probably the best way to understand the show is to start at our favorites page, http://www.thisamericanlife.org/favorites , though we do have longer guides to our radio show and our TV show. If you want to dive into the hundreds of episodes we've done over the years, there's an archive of all our old radio shows and listings for all our TV episodes, too.
This week on This American Life: Growing up in Russia as the only black person in her town, Yelena always dreamed about who she might date if she came to America. And then one day, she gets the chance to visit. That, plus more stories of people for whom home does not exactly feel like home this week on This American Life.

We return to our story about Abdi Nor from 2015, with some news about his life today. When we first broadcast the story, Abdi was a Somali refugee living in Kenya desperately trying – against long odds – to get to the United States. Then he got the luckiest break of his life: he won a lottery that puts him on a short list for a U.S. visa. But before he could cash in his golden ticket, the police started raiding his neighborhood, targeting refugees.

This week on This American Life: In these dark, combative times, an attempt at radical counterprogramming. It’s a show made up entirely of delight. Stories about the young, the old, the animals… stories of delight lost, delight found, and delight reclaimed. An hour of delight, this week, on This American Life.

A different kind of #MeToo story, about several women who worked for the same man. They tell us not only about their troubling encounters with him, but also about their lives beforehand. Who were they when they entered the workplace, and how did their personal histories shape the way they dealt with his harassment?
