  • Western Monarch Butterflies Bounce Back from Verge of Extinction | Bay Area Bountiful

Every year, volunteer citizen scientists return to the California Coast to participate in the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count. Their work observing and counting monarch butterflies at hundreds of overwintering sites from Mendocino to Baja provides the best look at how the species is faring after years of serious decline.
After entering an “extinction vortex” in 2018 and hitting all-time low numbers in 2020, the 2021 count provided a glimmer of hope as observers, like Mia Monroe of the Xerces Society, saw monarchs bounce back with the highest population count totals in five years.
“I know monarchs are resilient. I know they bounce back. I know they are survivors. They will find a way,” Monroe said.

wilderthanwild 603x452Wednesday, July 29 at 8 pm on KPJK TV in the South Bay. Wilder Than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future reveals how fire suppression and climate change have exposed our forests and wildland-urban landscapes to large, high severity wildfires, while greenhouse gases released from these fires contribute to global warming. In this one-hour documentary, filmmaker Kevin White takes us on a journey from the Rim Fire of 2013 to the wine country wildfires of 2017 and beyond. Along the way, we learn how the proactive use of prescribed fire can reduce reliance on reactive fire suppression, we see a California tribe renew their tradition of cultural fire, and we meet stakeholder groups working with scientists and resource managers to build consensus on how to restore and manage the lands we love and depend on.

  • Wine Harvest and Fire Season Means Bad Air for Agricultural Workers

Late summer is grape harvest season in Sonoma County, an extremely important time for Sonoma County’s billion dollar wine industry. Unfortunately, now, because of climate change, harvest coincides with California’s annual fire season.

That puts harvest workers, like Anabel Garcia, on the front lines. They have to endure long, hard days working in hazardous conditions and breathing smoky air. “You can feel it in your throat,” says Garcia. “And it’s harder to breathe.”

Although farm and agricultural workers, like Garcia, are protected by California’s strong labor laws, some don’t feel that enough is being done to protect these workers.

“If we value the wine, we should value the people who do the work to produce this wine,” says Max Bell Alper, Executive Director of North Bay Jobs With Justice.
