The Santa Cruz Mountains wine region is nestled in one of the most unique natural environments in the world. With its mountainous terrain, marine and valley influences, varied micro-climates, and diverse soils, the Santa Cruz Mountains provides vintners with the ideal place to grow high quality grapes and to produce some of the world’s most distinct and terroir driven wines.
The Santa Cruz Mountains has played a pivotal role in the history of winemaking in California, with roots going back over 100 years, and includes legendary winemakers such as Paul Masson, Martin Ray, David Bennion, David Bruce, Paul Draper, Jeffrey Patterson, Marty Mathis and others. As an appellation, the Association has grown from approximately 40 wineries to well over 70.
As the first AVA to be defined as a range of mountains, it is “America’s Premier Mountain Appellation.” In Paris, 1976, a blind tasting proved that California wines could equal and even surpass the great French wines. Out of 12 wines chosen to represent California, two were from the Santa Cruz Mountains - Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Cabernet and David Bruce Winery Chardonnay.
You’ll receive a case of Santa Cruz Mountains wines:
2012 Loma Prieta Pinot Noir
2014 Silvertip Vineyards Pinot Noir
2013 Windy Oaks Pinot Noir, Limited Release
2013 Silver Mountain Vineyards Chardonnay
2013 Ser Pinot Noir, Lilo Vineyard
2010 Woodside Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
2012 Kings Mountain Vineyards Bacchus Pinot Noir
2012 Big Basin Pinot Noir, Lester Family Vineyard
2013 Armitage Pinot Noir, Mt. Roberta Reserve
2012 Thomas Fogarty Pinot Noir, Razorback Vineyard
(2) 2012 Silver Mountain Vineyards Syrah
Four times a year, the winegrowing community of the Santa Cruz Mountains come together to celebrate the generations of farmers, vintners and families that are the roots of this unique mountainous region.
You’ll receive two Santa Cruz Mountains Passports. On the third Saturday of January, April, July and November, Passport holders are welcomed into participating wineries throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains, each offering a unique winery experience. The possibilities are as varied as the wineries themselves and promise a fun, unforgettable day no matter if you go wine tasting on Passport Days or any other day or weekend throughout the year.
Passport Days is your opportunity to meet the legendary winemakers of the Santa Cruz Mountains. At each winery visited, a page of the Passport will be given a unique commemorative stamp. When you have at least 12 stamps, the Passports can be mailed back to the SCMWA – they’ll return your Passport along with a pass to the “Evening of Wine and Roses”, where you can visit with the majority of Santa Cruz Mountain winemakers in one location and taste incredible wines.
You’ll have a two night stay for two people at Chaminade Resort & Spa, a spectacular mountain-top retreat.
