the "Thru" bridge and the "Spring" bridge. Both bridges would lift as needed for boat traffic on the American River. The visual experience would be different for people depending on the type of support structure that's chosen, according to Jesse Gothan, the supervising engineer for the project for the city of Sacramento.
“The ‘Thru’ is a truss bridge with these very large, cathedral-like triangle trusses and the ‘Spring’ has the cables and is more like a basket-handle-type bridge," said Gothan.

Both were designed by the T.Y. Lin International Group.
The “Thru” bridge would cost $188 million, and the “Spring” would cost $210 million. Currently the cities have secured $158 million, and are applying for local, state, and federal dollars from the Sacramento Area Council Of Governments, state Senate Bill 1 transportation funding and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Public comment will be accepted through Wednesday on the project website which includes ideas on alternative forms of transit.
"Also, we're asking for community feedback on how the Sacramento Parkway will interface with the bridge and the undercrossing of the bridge of the Sac Parkway and also the Riverwalk on the West Sacramento side and how that will be incorporated," Gothan said.
The final design will be announced early next year.
The selection committee is made up of Congresswoman Doris Matsui and two Sacramento and two West Sacramento city council members.
Two other designs, called the Garden and the Solar Arch, were removed from consideration because they would have each cost $260 million.
