Tuesday's update showed Valenzuela leading by nearly 1,000 votes, or 53 percent (7,108 votes), to Hansen’s 46 percent (6,138).

“It seems like we will come up short in this race,” Hansen wrote in the post, adding that Valenzuela and “her allies” fought “an unprecedented negative campaign.”

During the campaign, a door hanger funded by a local union compared Hansen to President Trump and drew criticism from Mayor Darrell Steinberg during a press conference. Hansen said the ad was “bullying” him for being openly-gay, and Valenzuela denounced the ad as “disturbing.”

On Tuesday, she told CapRadio that her team “ran a strong, people powered campaign.”

“I’m thrilled to have earned the support of voters in District 4,” Valenzuela wrote in a text message. “I can’t wait to take office in December so we can get to work.”

District 4 — which also includes parts of Land Park, “Little Pocket” and northwest Sacramento — has been represented by Hansen since 2012.

The county will provide its next update in the race on Friday. There could be anywhere from 7,000 to 10,000 ballots remaining to count.
