Every Tuesday in July, our primos at PBS will present The Latino Experience, a three-part showcase of short films about the Latinx experience made by Latinx filmmakers.

With the recent release of In The Heights, we decided to take a look at the state of Latinx filmmaking at large; we talk to one of the filmmakers featured on the PBS series, Karla Legaspy; as well as Aitch Alberto and Santa Sierra, two screenwriters who are working toward a goal of a more inclusive space for all kinds of Latinx voices. These explorations of culture and identity also remind us of the power of indie films to accurately reflect reality in a way that mainstream Hollywood films often miss.

Our thanks to our friends at PBS for their help with the show this week as well as the folks at Latino Public Broadcasting for their work for supporting indie Latino expression in public media.
