The Mendocino Coast on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
The National Weather Service warned of hazardous beach conditions on Sunday for Pacific Coast beaches from Monterey County to Oregon in an advisory that is active through Tuesday.
The beach hazards warning and high surf advisory urge swimmers and surfers to avoid the water and visitors to avoid going onto the beach during the active period.Breaking waves are forecast to be 10-14 feet high with lulls of 10-20 minutes or longer in between sets, which can give the false appearance of a calm ocean.
Beachgoers should be on the lookout for sneaker waves, which can sweep faster and farther up the beach than many people expect.
Rocks, jetties and any beach feature near the water should specifically be avoided because waves can knock people off without warning. The Weather Service said beachgoers should never take their eyes off the ocean.
Rip currents are also forecast, which pull swimmers out from the beach.
If caught in a rip current, the Weather Service and lifeguards advise not to fight it by swimming directly back to the beach, which can tire swimmers out. Instead, swim parallel to the beach before heading towards the shore at a diagonal angle away from the current.
