Santa Rosa officers arrested three retail theft suspects after a vehicle pursuit and collision, police said Tuesday.
At 2:46 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the Dick's Sporting Goods store at 1975 Cleveland Ave. for a report of an organized retail theft. According to the store's employees, three people loaded significant amounts of merchandise into some garbage bags before leaving the establishment.
The employees provided police with a description of the suspects' vehicle and its license plate.
Shortly after the report, an officer saw a vehicle, which appeared to have the same description as what the employees gave, driving south on U.S. Highway 101 near Hearn Avenue. A Sonoma County Sheriff's Office helicopter crew also saw the vehicle so they coordinated with more deputies for assistance with a traffic stop, police said.
When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, it allegedly sped away and a pursuit ensued. Police chased the vehicle until it got into a traffic collision in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 between Cotati and Petaluma. All three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody, police said.
During a search of the crashed vehicle, detectives found over $5,800 in stolen merchandise, clothing the suspects allegedly wore during the Santa Rosa theft, as well as a loaded privately made firearm.
Santa Rosa detectives learned the arrested suspects were likely responsible for a series of similar thefts at several Dick's Sporting Goods stores in the Bay Area. Employees estimated total losses attributed to this theft crew to be over $75,000, police said.
The suspects, identified as Brandon Owens, 23, Heaven Henry, 20, and Roy Andrew Jr., 22, suffered minor injuries from the collision. After medical clearance, they were booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of several offenses, including organized retail theft, conspiracy, burglary, carrying a loaded firearm, and carrying a concealed firearm.
