A 16-year old Santa Rosa high school student has died following a campus fight Wednesday morning.

Santa Rosa police said they got a call just after 11 a.m. about a fight at Montgomery High School on Hahman Drive.

Police responded to the scene, but the suspect fled the campus before being apprehended in a nearby creek bed around 11:50 AM.

Santa Rosa Police Chief John Cregan detailed the incident at a press conference at Montgomery High School shortly after 3 p.m.

"Two juniors, which are students here at Montgomery High School, entered a classroom," Cregan said. "They weren't students in this particular classroom. It was an art classroom. They entered the classroom and engaged in a physical altercation with a student who was in the classroom that was a freshman student. All three of them were male students here at the campus."

Cregan said staff were only able to break up the fight momentarily.

"And at that point, the student who was inside the classroom produced a knife, described as a folding knife with a black handle," Cregan said. "Had a blade of approximately four to five inches and started engaging into two students who had come into the classroom. Both those students were stabbed. One of those students received what preliminary appears to be three stabbed wounds to his upper body. One student received one stab wound to his left hand."

The two injured students were first treated by the school nurse before being transported to a local hospital, where one of the students, a 16 year old junior at Montgomery High School passed away from his wounds according to Cregan.

The other wounded student is expected to survive.

Santa Rosa City Schools Superintendent Anna Trunnell said the district's thoughts are with all affected by the stabbing.

"Right now our focus is on meeting the immediate, physical and emotional needs of our students and staff," Trunnell said.

The fight is still being investigated.

More information on whether classes at Montgomery High will resume tomorrow will be available by 6 P.M. Wednesday.
