
Since the California Coastal Commission was created, though a voter-approved initiative in 1972, it has often been a forum for controversy. Even the move to dismiss Executive Director Charles Lester has a precedent, observes former Commissioner Mike Reilly.
But Reilly adds that, based on his own experience and observations, the Commission’s reputation as a barrier to coastal projects—from resorts to power plants to subdivisions—is not justified by their decision-making record.
