But the Bicycle Coalitions of Marin and Sonoma County charge the transit agency is not fulfilling that part of their mandate.

  The petition drive and lobbying efforts of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition (which their Sonoma counterparts support and endorse) are a measure of how seriously they view this issue, says the group’s Policy and Planning Director, Alshia Oloughlin. And they’re prepared to take further steps if necessary.

One of the longer rural sections of the pathway along the rail line is being built by CalTrans, as part of their upgrade of Highway 101 between Novato and Petaluma. Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Gary Helfrich says the state agency has been more forthcoming about their project than has SMART.
