"What we found was that microbeads have the ability to absorb all kinds of toxins, from PCBs, to pesticides, even oil drops falling from cars, they stick to plastics," says Marcus Eriksen, research director at the 5 Gyres Institute. "So one small microplastic particle can become a toxic little pill overtime."
California is considering legislation that would ban the beads. Several industry groups have announced plans to phase out plastic beads from their products.
