A generation of kids in South Africa are growing up HIV positive, a medical and social challenge that overlies widespread poverty. Widening their horizons is the goal of "Our Fertile Ground," a small non-profit with North Bay ties.
Right now, the Sheas are limited to part-time use of a camp facility, but Robert describes the vision they are working toward, of a location that will be theirs to develop and use full-time.
By initiating their relationships with the children at the clinics--and more crucially, by sustaining those contacts over time, Jawaya Shea explains they have been able to maintain contacts with them as they grow--even to the point where some of their first campers are now serving as counselors to younger kids.
Our Fertile Ground is an atypical name for an organization such as theirs, but Jawaya explains how it grew out of a personally meaningful experience for her.
