Sonoma County has a new Health Officer, responsible for overseeing the Department of Health Services. Dr. Celeste Philip started the job on April 9th and is replacing Karen Milman who stepped down from the role last March. Philip comes to us from Florida where she led the response to the Zika outbreak in 2016 and managed the state’s public health response during five hurricanes. Reporter Adia White talked with Philips about her background and the major health challenges facing Sonoma County today.

Editor's Note: On May 13, Dr. Celeste Philip sent a letter to all parents in Sonoma County about the nationwise measles outbreak.“ I would like to encourage all unvaccinated children to receive the measles vaccine as soon as possible during this current outbreak,” said Dr. Philip, in releasing the letter. “Vaccinations are safe and the most effective way to prevent many childhood diseases.”
